Altenew | Pop-It-Up Blooming Hydrangea

I’m Deepa from @deezinesbyd, and today I’m sharing an elegant yet dramatic floral card featuring the Altenew Pop-It-Up: Blooming Hydrangea die set. If you love dimension, rich color, and florals that truly stand out, this project is going to be right up your alley 💜✨

What makes this hydrangea so special is how effortlessly Altenew adds impact. The flowers are die-cut using the embossed one-piece Pop-It-Up die from white cardstock, which creates instant texture and beautiful definition in one pass through the die-cutting machine—no layering guesswork required!

Once die cut, I brought the blooms to life using Distress Oxide inks in Marigold, Spun Sugar, Villainous Potion, and Black Soot. This color combination creates a soft-meets-moody effect, with the lighter florals glowing against the deeper purples for a truly dramatic finish. I love how Distress Oxides blend seamlessly while still keeping that chalky softness.

 For the leaves, I stamped them onto cardstock and heat embossed with gold embossing powder for an extra touch of elegance. Then I painted them with Distress Oxide inks in Mowed Lawn and Cracked Pistachio, which adds freshness and contrast while letting that gold shine peek through. This step really elevates the card and gives it a luxe, mixed-media feel.

The background was kept intentionally simple but bold, created with a soft wash of Black Soot Distress Oxide. This muted, inky backdrop allows the hydrangea to take center stage while enhancing the overall drama of the color palette. Sometimes less is more—and this background proves it.

To finish the card, I added a clean sentiment strip and a few subtle embellishments for balance and polish, letting the florals remain the true star of the design.

This card is a perfect example of how smart die design and intentional color choices can do most of the heavy lifting for you. The Pop-It-Up: Blooming Hydrangea set is one of those tools that works harder so you don’t have to—ideal for both quick makes and show-stopping cards.
