Hello crafty friends! Today I’m sharing a fun and interactive Father's Day card featuring the Hero Arts Jean Jacket Cutting Dies and coordinating Hero Arts Jean Jacket Layering Stencils.
This project creates a hinged jacket flap that opens to reveal a hidden sentiment inside—perfect for adding a playful and personal touch to your handmade cards.
Creating the Hinged Base
To begin, I created the base for my hinged jacket by trimming a panel of kraft cardstock and scoring it to leave an extra ½ inch flap along one side. This scored section will act as the hinge for the jacket front.
Make sure to burnish the fold well so the flap opens and closes smoothly.
Ink Blending the Jacket Front
Next, I used the Hero Arts Jean Jacket Layering Stencils to build up the look of the jacket front. These stencils are fantastic because they add realistic denim texture and shading.
For ink blending, I used Ranger Distress Oxide Ink in soft blue tones such as:
Layering these colors creates depth and gives the jacket a true denim look.
Once the ink blending was complete, I used the Jean Jacket Cutting Dies to cut out the shape—making sure to keep the scored hinge intact by only die cutting up to the collar edge.
Creating the Jacket Back
To give the card a finished and polished look, I created the back side of the jacket using a second panel of kraft cardstock.
I repeated the ink blending process with the same layering stencils. One of my favorite features of this stencil set is that it allows you to create both the front and back of the jacket, adding versatility to your projects.

Building the Hinged Flap
For the next step, I die cut the jacket shape from a scrap piece of paper and used it as a template to trace the reverse jacket shape and cut it.
I then adhered this traced piece onto the flap portion of the hinge. This step ensures that the inside of the flap looks just as finished as the outside, creating a clean and professional result.

Creating the Card Base
I used a standard A2 card base and kept the design simple to let the jacket take center stage.
To enhance the background:
-
I added soft ink blending around the edges using Rusty Hinge Distress Oxide Ink
- I stamped subtle script details using Tumbled Glass Distress Oxide Ink for a vintage-inspired look
I then added bold “DAD” lettering using Alphabet Dies and stamped “you are my hero” sentiment to make this card perfect for Father’s Day.

Final Assembly
To finish the card:
-
I adhered the hinged jacket flap onto the card base
-
Ensured the flap opens smoothly to reveal the sentiment inside
-
Added small button details for a realistic finishing touch
The result is a fun interactive Father’s Day card that combines layering, ink blending, and dimensional design.
This project is a great way to explore:
-
Interactive cardmaking techniques
-
Layered stencil designs
-
Creative die-cut construction

The Hero Arts Jean Jacket Dies and Layering Stencils from the Friends with Flair Collection make it easy to achieve a realistic and unique look, while the hinge element adds that extra “wow” factor.
