Simon Hurley Spellbinders Metamorphosis Collection

Simon Hurley Spellbinders Metamorphosis Collection

Hello ScrapbookPal friends! Here's a card I made for the ScrapbookPal Design Team using the new Spellbinders Paper Arts Metamorphosis Collection by Simon Hurley. For this card, I used both the In Bloom floral die set, and the Stained Glass Window dies.

I loved the story behind this collection by Simon. I read he wanted to embrace his growth in the industry from the young, more whimsical Simon to a more mature version of himself with this collection. I wanted to capture the refinement and elegance of this set, when compared to some of his other work. I felt I wanted to go with some soft colors, but wanted to stay away from pinks and yellows. I thought of these flowers in a beautiful soft coral color, on a light gray, slightly textured background. I think this card came together much like I had imagined it would.

Looking at the dies, I wasn't crazy about the round center layer on the large flower. To me, it looked more like a bud, or a seed pod, than part of a flower. It would be fine if I was going for whimsy, but I wasn't. I did cut out all of the flower pieces, including the side view flower, and put them together. However, after coloring them, I decided to go with two of the bigger flowers with two "buds". I know, I know, I broke the rule of threes, but I did play around with the placement for a while, and felt it worked.

I cut all of the flower pieces and leaves out of white watercolor paper. For the flower petals, I blended Tim Holtz Distress Tattered Rose Oxide Ink over the whole diecut piece, and then added Abandoned Coral Oxide Ink in the center of the petal piece for shading. I tried different shades of yellows for the two center pieces that fit together. I ended up using Scattered Straw Distress Ink on the innermost piece of the flower center. I used Abandoned Coral, applied with a heavy hand for a little more contrast, on the outer ring. I like how this gave the flowers a whole different look. It's nice to be able to get different looks from the same die set.

I colored the leaves with Distress Inks in Cracked Pistachio, Lucky Clover and Evergreen Bough. It seemed like they were in the right color family to coordinate with the flower, but they were just a little too... stark. I happened to have my new Tim Holtz Lost Shadow Oxide Ink out on my craft table, and decided to see if a light application of that over the leaves would help. It worked perfectly, in my opinion. As you can see below, the addition of the Lost Shadow was just that subtle bit of shading that really pulled my card together.

I definitely wanted to use the Stained Glass Window die for the background. I cut the window out of a piece of Tim Holtz Holiday 2022 Gray Two Tone Woodgrain Cardstock.

Using Scrapbook Adhesives 3D Thin Foam Mounting Squares, I popped this die up over a piece of light fog gray cardstock. I thought that would be perfect for this card. Here's a up close the delicate detail created by using this over light gray paper, raised up by the foam mounting squares.

I'd also like to say how wonderfully this stained glass window die cut the heavier paper. I typically avoid dies that look like they'll take forever to weed, but this one from Spellbinders and Simon Hurley cut easily and cleanly with just one pass through my Big Shot machine using my regular cutting plates. The extra pieces just fell right out. You will not be disappointed with the quality of these dies!

To finish off the card, I added a sentiment that I created using the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil Yana's Sentiments set. This set comes with the foil plates as well as the cutting dies for 5 different sentiments. I love the font, and how fine and delicate the finished sentiment looks. I used Spellbinders Black Glimmer Foil for the sentiment, on white heavyweight cardstock.

I hope you enjoyed this "grown up" Simon Hurley inspired card, and are excited to check out these gorgeous sets from Spellbinders, available at ScrapbookPal.com!
