Spellbinders | Sketched Peonies

Spellbinders | Sketched Peonies

Posted by Vicky Hattingh on

Hi crafty friends!  Today I am sharing a card showcasing the Spellbinders/Simon Hurley collaboration called Sketched Peonies Stamps and Dies Set.  Since the peonies were created in a more hand drawn nature, I thought watercoloring the images would really contribute to the vibe Simon Hurley brought forward with these lovely stamps.

Creating the Background/Focal Point Panel

I placed a piece of Ranger Ink/Tim Holtz Distress Watercolor Cardstock into my MISTI Stamping Tool and stamped the large floral from the Simon Hurley Sketched Peonies stamp set onto the cardstock using a grey, waterproof ink.  I placed the stamped watercolor paper onto my work surface and used the Ranger Ink/Tim Holtz Speckled Egg Distress Ink Pad as my background watercoloring medium.  To do this, I used a round #8 paint brush and added clean water around the perimeter of the floral image, smooshed the Speckled Egg ink pad onto my glass work surface, and dropped in Speckled Egg ink using only the tip of the paint brush.  You’ll need to work in small sections at a time to keep the water from being absorbed into the watercolor paper too quickly.  I allowed the ink to plume and spread naturally, then used the clean watercolor brush to feather out any hard edges.

Once the panel was dry, I moved onto the flowers.  I used the following Ranger Ink / Tim Holtz Distress Ink ink pads for the flower petals:  Spun Sugar, Picked Raspberry, and Seedless Preserves.  Just as before, I smooshed each of the ink pads onto my glass mat and worked on each flower petal one at a time.  First was a complete watercolor wash over the flower petal of Distress Ink Spun Sugar, while the watercolor was still wet, I dropped in Distress Ink Picked Raspberry where the most shadowing would be, followed up with a touch of Distress Ink Seedless Preserves between the Picked Raspberry and Spun Sugar on the tips of the petals.  I continued with this process until all the flower petals were painted.

For the leaves, I smooshed Distress Ink Rustic Wilderness and Distress Ink Twisted Citron ink pads onto my glass mat and applied those two colors to the leaves and stems to give them a nice green gradient glow.  I used Distress Ink Fossilized Amber for the flower centers and simply gave them a flat wash of color.  For the anthers of the flower stamens, I added Tombow Mono Glue Pen adhesive and sprinkled them with Spellbinders’ Yellow Paper Flower Pollen for added interest and texture.  For some flair, I added Glitter Clear Wink of Stella Brush Tip Marker to the flower petals.

Creating the Sentiment

For the sentiment, I selected the “Thinking of You” greeting from the Simon Hurley Sketched Peonies stamp set.  I used my MISTI Stamping Tool and the same grey ink I used to stamp the floral image and stamped the sentiment onto a scrap piece of Distress Watercolor Paper and used the Spellbinders / Simon Hurley Sketched Peonies coordinating dies to die cut the sentiment then die cut two additional pieces from plain white cardstock to stack the sentiment for dimension.  I used Bearly Art Precision Craft Glue to adhere the three sentiment die cuts together.

Assembling the Card

Using the Catherine Pooler Dots & Scallops die set, I used the largest die in the set to die cut the watercolored panel so that it measures 4” x 5.25”.  I added 1” x 1/16” Altenew Instant Dimension Foam Tape to the back side of the panel and adhered it to an A2, lime green, side folding card base.  For my final touch, I added some light green gems from the Honey Bee Stamps Holiday Wishes Gem Stickers.
